We got a dog in Oviedo — here's what I learned about breeders, rescues, vets, and groomers

A personal, slightly messy guide to bringing a pup home in our corner of Seminole County

Last spring, my wife and I finally did the thing we'd talked about for years: we got a dog. A little mutt we named Junebug, who's equal parts terror and cuddle bug. We live over by the Oviedo Mall area, and let me tell you, figuring out the whole breeder-or-rescue, vet, groomer pipeline in a town like ours is its own kind of adventure. Everybody's got an opinion, and half the places you Google are either closed or have a two-month wait. So here's my story, plus the notes I wish somebody had handed me back in March.

Rescue vs. breeder: our decision (and a few names)

Rescue vs. breeder: our decision (and a few names) — Oviedo, FL

We started at the Seminole County Animal Services off 17-92. Nice facility, lots of dogs. We went twice — first time just to look, second time to meet a scruffy terrier mix. He was sweet but had some reactivity issues that our landlord (and our cat) would not have appreciated. So we pivoted.

We ended up going with a small breeder out near Geneva who specializes in low-shedding mutt crosses. I found her through a referral at Oviedo Feed & Pet Supply — the folks there know everybody. If you're looking for a reputable breeder, I'd start there or ask at the Oviedo Farmers Market; there's always someone with a puppy story. Avoid the online classifieds — I heard too many 'my cousin got ripped off' tales from people at the dog park.

Finding a vet in Oviedo: our experience with three clinics

Finding a vet in Oviedo: our experience with three clinics — Oviedo, FL

Our first vet was at the big Banfield inside PetSmart — it was convenient, but the turnover of vets got annoying. After a year, we switched to Animal Medical Clinic on Lockwood Boulevard. Dr. Hutchins there is great with anxious dogs, and they don't upsell you on every test. They also board, which is handy for trips to the beach.

I've also heard good things about Oviedo Veterinary Care on Mitchell Hammock — they have late hours — and Countryside Animal Hospital over by the 417. But get on the schedule early. When we adopted Junebug, the earliest new-patient appointment at two of these places was six weeks out. That's a long time for a puppy who needs shots.

Groomers we've tried (and one we swear by)

Groomers we've tried (and one we swear by) — Oviedo, FL

Junebug has a wiry coat that mats if you look at her wrong. Our first groomer was at a chain place near the Oviedo Mall — they did a fine job but kept pushing extra services. Then we found Mo's Mobile Grooming, a woman who comes to your house in a converted van. She works with nervous dogs and doesn't rush. It's a little more expensive, but worth it for the lack of drama.

For basic baths, the self-serve wash at Tractor Supply on 426 is a lifesaver — only $10 and they provide aprons and towels. There's also a new shop called The Grooming Room on Alafaya that a neighbor uses for her golden retriever. She says they're patient with big, wiggly dogs.

Essential supplies — what I actually needed

Essential supplies — what I actually needed — Oviedo, FL

Everyone tells you to buy a crate, bowls, a leash, and a bed. And yeah, you need those. But the things I actually panicked about: poop bags (the cheap ones from Amazon break — get the PetSafe brand from the Oviedo PetSmart), a car harness (she slid off the seat on the first turn), and a slow feeder bowl (she ate her dinner in 14 seconds and then threw up). Also, a baby gate. We got ours at Target on 426. It keeps her out of the laundry room where we keep the litter box.

Oh, and a good vacuum. We bought a Dyson stick vac from the Best Buy in Oviedo, and it's pulled more dog hair out of the rug than I thought existed.

Dog parks and socialization in Oviedo

Dog parks and socialization in Oviedo — Oviedo, FL

We started at the Oviedo Dog Park on Center Lake Lane. It's split into big-dog and small-dog sides, with water fountains and benches. Junebug was terrified the first time — too many dogs charging at her. We went back on a weekday morning when it was empty, and she slowly came around. Now she loves it, though I still keep the treats handy.

For quieter socialization, we walk the trails at Little Big Econ State Forest — just be careful of snakes and gators. And the Oviedo Farmers Market on Saturdays is a good low-stress place to practice 'leave it' when someone drops a tomato. The other dog owners are friendly, and if you go early, it's not too crowded.

Emergency vet — the one I hope you never need

Emergency vet — the one I hope you never need — Oviedo, FL

Last fall, Junebug ate a sock. Yes, a sock. The vet told us to wait and see if it passed, but two days later she was lethargic and whimpering. We rushed her to Veterinary Emergency Clinic of Central Florida on 436 in Altamonte Springs. They were fast, professional, and surprisingly not as expensive as I'd feared (still a lot — about $900 for X-rays, fluids, and overnight observation). The sock eventually passed, but the lesson is: know where the 24-hour vet is before you need it.

There's also the Emergency Pet Hospital on Lake Underhill in Orlando, but Altamonte is closer from Oviedo. Save their number in your phone now.

Questions folks ask me

Does Oviedo require dog licenses?

Seminole County requires all dogs to be licensed — you can get one at the county tax collector's office or online. It's about $20 for a spayed/neutered dog. The license helps them get your dog home if they escape.

Are there any breed restrictions in Oviedo?

Not county-wide, but some apartment complexes and HOAs have their own rules. Our neighborhood (by the Oviedo Mall) has no restrictions, but a friend's HOA near Black Hammock bans 'aggressive breeds.' Always check your lease.

What's the best way to find a lost dog in Oviedo?

Join the 'Oviedo Lost and Found Pets' Facebook group — it's very active. Also call Seminole County Animal Services and put up flyers at the Oviedo Feed & Pet Supply and the library. My neighbor found her beagle that way.

Can I take my dog to the Oviedo Farmers Market?

Yes! Dogs on leashes are welcome at the market on Saturdays. Just be mindful of crowds and keep them away from food booths. We bring a collapsible water bowl.

Are there any dog-friendly restaurants in Oviedo?

Several. Townhouse Restaurant has a patio where dogs are allowed, and The Porch on Lake Jesup also welcomes them. The Wawa on 426 has outdoor seating too, but it's not exactly fine dining.

Getting Junebug was the best thing we did last year. She's a pain in the neck sometimes — she chewed a remote last week — but she's also the reason I go for walks every morning and know half the neighbors by their dog's name. If you're thinking about bringing a dog into your life here in Oviedo, I hope this helps you skip some of the headaches I had. The vets are solid, the groomers are kind, and the dog park is full of friendly people — even if your dog is a little weird at first. Good luck, and say hi if you see me out on the trails with a scruffy brown mutt who is absolutely convinced every squirrel is a threat to national security.
